Trials HD Tuesday: Blocks

Not everyone is a Trials veteran, and even those that are don’t always want to ride incredibly difficult tracks. It’s fitting, then, that Extobo released Blocks, a track that brings things back to basics: a smooth ride in a warehouse setting. There’s no crazy lighting, no cool physics tricks, just plain, simple riding. We love it.

Trials HD Tuesday Thursday: CS4 Operative 3

Okay, so it’s two days late. Bame us for gearing up for PAX.

Anywhoo, here’s a great little track from Trials veteran CannibalShogun. It’s setting is that of a world crisis where the rider must get to and disarm a missile. It never ceases to amaze us what the Trials community can do with these tools, and this one is right up there with the rest of the greats. It’s a little short, but it’s a ton of fun.

Trials Evolution preview and gameplay

After the announcement and all-too-short teaser trailer from E3 2011, we’d been anxiously waiting for anything new regarding Trials Evolution. The sequel to the tough-as-nails Trials HD will actually be much harder. Checkpoints will be more spread out, so players have to understand what they’re doing and how they do it instead of accidentally making it to the next checkpoint. Progression will now depend on the medals you earn instead of simply finishing a level, so going for the gold will be better than getting a bronze. Skill games are back, but have been re-imagined to be more rewarding and more skill-oriented. These new ideas are not to frustrate and infuriate, but to make sure players have enough experience before they tackle the harder challenges.

The game will feature wide open spaces and stunning vistas, which are much more beautiful than the closed-in warehouse from the last game. Smoke and water effects are also improved. Players can make their own levels and landscapes with the return of the editor, but now it will be even easier to share and receive levels. Sharing is done over the Track Central Hub, where users can upload their tracks for the world to download and play. There will be categories separating most downloaded and top rated tracks, and even tracks recommended by Redlynx. This will add much more free content to the game, and be quite helpful for our Trials HD Tuesday articles.

Trials Evolution supports four players, both on and off Live. Offline, the four players appear on screen in the same course, and if one person crashes, they re-appear at the next checkpoint the remaining players reach. On Live, the other players are represented by ghosts. Offline tracks are easier than online tracks, for ease in sharing a single screen. You can mark your friends as rivals, so you can easily compare stats to see who’s the best. In a very clever move by Redlynx, hosts can decide whether or not players can bail out during a race. This new installment seems to be headed above and beyond the already great Trials HD, so fans may have a hard time waiting until Fall 2011 for the release of Evolution.

Trials HD Tuesday: YH-bloody wolf 1.0

YH-bloody wolf 1.0 is deceiving. It’s listed as a beginner course but beginners will find themselves throwing controllers. It’s not incredibly difficult, but it’s definitely mislisted. Putting that aside it’s a gorgeous silhouette-style track with a blood red background, hence the name. It’s quality and it’s unique.

Trials HD Tuesday: Tombstone

We’re always up for custom Trials HD tracks that make use of the game’s other modes. Tombstone makes use of the Down the Stairs game type, and it does so brutally. Whereas the standard Down the Stairs track is simple, this puts your rider through multiple drops, sets them on fire, then finally smashes them with huge containers. This is one of those “simple pleasures” tracks that should be in everyone’s list.

Belated Trials HD Tuesday: Dockside

Here’s an interesting track by THD Net that ‘s themed around riding right near the edge of a busy dock. It’s got all the things you’d expect from the Trials HD community: ambient lighting, a fun theme, and clever use of objects. Dockside is much more about overcoming obstacles than smooth jumps and speed, so this may appeal to some more than others. Nevertheless we give it our approval.

XBLA Triple Pack cut to $10 at Best Buy

At XBLAFans, we normally don’t venture very close to retail considering the digital form of Xbox Live Arcade games. However, Best Buy is having a sale next week that’s almost too good to pass up. Sources at SlickDeals and Cheap Ass Gamer have both confirmed that Best Buy’s weekly print ad highlights a triple-pack of Splosion Man, Limbo, and Trials HD for a meager $10. The regular price for these games is 3200 MSP (or $40), so this low a price is clearly a steal. The deal will go live on July 17, 2011 (through July 23) and the product listing page should be refreshed to highlight the pricing change at that time. With our continuing coverage of excellent user-created Trials HD tracks, recent excitement for Ms. Splosion Man, and high praise for Limbo, this selection of XBLA titles is easy for us to recommend.

Trials HD Tuesday: Whistler

Ah, vanilla tracks. There’s something appealing about going back to basics. Tracks with themes are always fun, but sometimes you just need that default Trials layout. Whistler by JJtheGerman is just what the doctor ordered. It’s vanilla — no crazy lighting, no themes, just a total blast on a medium-to-hard course. This one’s a short, solid course that everyone should have in their library.
