Retro City Rampage launch trailer unveiled

Brian Provinciano’s eagerly anticipated Grand Theft Auto inspired shooter Retro City Rampage launches today on PSN and PC, with an XBLA release scheduled for later on this year. RCR started out as a one man homage to some of Provinciano’s favorite 8-Bit games and features a mash up of top down, open world driving and Smash TV style shooting, with a few platforming levels and even a little bit of Zelda-esque RPG fun thrown in for good measure.

Although fans of XBLA will have to wait for RCR‘s release later in the year (no date confirmed) we thought that this great little launch trailer might help to lessen the blow and keep fans of the game excited for when it is finally available.

Newsbits: October 4 – New TV apps edition

  • There was no XBLA game this Wednesday. Major Nelson, director of Xbox LIVE tweeted that it was because NBA Live 13 did not get released (and was in fact canned, according to EA). Was it going to be an XBLA game? Joystiq contacted EA, but got a simple “No Comment” response.
  • Behaviour Interactive celebrated its 20th birthday on Tuesday. The studio has released such XBLA titles as Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, Doritos Crash Course and the upcoming Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise. Congratulations to them on their success!
  • FOX released their Xbox 360 app last week. It features currently running shows as well as backlog titles like 24.
  • SyFy will be bringing Nuclear Family exclusively to their Xbox 360 app.
  • Microsoft has hired an ex-CBS executive to help develop original TV content for the 360.
  • Bastion and Fez are in the running — along with several high profile retail titles — for GameCity Prize 2012. The winner will be announced October 24.
  • According to the Retro City Rampage Twitter account, the game’s launch trailer is in production. Could that mean a release is right around the corner?
  • The Xbox 360 Entertainment Bundle recently went on sale, targeting the 10 people who don’t own an Xbox 360. The bundle includes a 4GB console along with three months of Gold time, a media remote, USD $10 Amazon media credit and three Xbox Live Arcade games.

A sneak peek at Retro City Rampage achievements

Retro City Rampage sort of disappeared from the media radar after missing it’s target release date of May. We’ve heard bits and pieces in the form of things like the Virtual Meat Boy minigame, but nothing big and meaty–nothing that quenches our insatiable hunger that is the desire to play this game. We’ll have to live off tiny morsels a bit longer it seems. While we haven’t heard anything on an updated release date, the official Twitter feed for the game gives us a glimpse into a few of the achievements. We’re really excited for all the tongue-in-cheek references to 80’s culture, but killing the Ninja Turtles? That’s just not cool at all.

Indie greats revealed for Minecraft skin pack 2

The reveal of Minecraft‘s second skin pack means the return of revealing sets of skins five at a time. While 4J’s Minecraft skins have always been good, the skins revealed today may be the greatest, most XBLA-friendly ones yet. The newest skins are all characters from indie games: Skulls of the Shogun‘s General Akamoto, Super Meat Boy, Spelunky, Cobalt Agent from the Mojang-published PC game Cobalt, and The Player from Retro City Rampage. Skin Pack 2 will feature 45 skins and is expected to cost 160MSP, akin to Skin Pack 1. More skins will be announced in the coming weeks.

Retro City Rampage will include Virtual Meat Boy mini-game

We’ve known there were going to be some special XBLA character cameos in the upcoming 8-bit 80’s homage Retro City Rampage, and we couldn’t wait to see our favorite characters in lower resolutions. One such cameo will be platforming legend Super Meat Boy, but he’s ditching his roots to parody classic racing games. The Virtual Meat Boy game has Meat Boy retaining all of his agility, but put to use in a 3D world full of spikes and bandages. Viewing options will add another dimension to the gameplay, allowing the game to be played in either 2D or stereoscopic 3D. Beat the mini-game, and you can play as Meat Boy in free-roam. It will be completely worth it; he can out-run a cop car with the power of grease.

Meat Boy won’t be the only cameo; Splosion Man and Commander Video are also in the line-up, each with their own unique mini-game. More information on Commander Video will be released soon, but attendees of E3 2012 can play all of the mini-games at the  Xbox booth, #501, in the South Hall. Retro City Rampage will release this summer.

Retro City Rampage to feature XBLA character cameos

Retro City Rampage looks to be fighting for the title of Most Pop Culture References in a Video Game. While we already knew about cameos like Mr. Destructoid and nods like the Ninja Turtle van and Back to the Future DeLorean, we’ve recently learned that some Xbox Live Arcade characters will be getting some love, too. ‘Splosion Man and his blushing bride will grace the screen and will playable during specific portions of the game. CommanderVideo and Super Meat Boy will also be making appearances. The best part of these recent announcements is that once you beat a given character’s minigame they’ll be unlockable for free roam play.
