Japanese developer cites Microsoft currency policy as barrier to XBLA development

MSPCardYens

Much has been made over the last seven years about the high cost of publishing, promoting and patching on Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE Arcade platform. Last week, G.Rev president Hiroyuki Maruyama (Strania: The Stellar Machine, Under Defeat HD) shared his own thoughts on the platform.

“A strong yen and a weak dollar is very damaging to us because XBLA and DLC are ‘export products.’ That’s why Japanese developers avoid making games for Xbox 360. When we released Strania on XBLA, the rate was 80 yen per dollar. (wry smile) If Japanese people buy our game in MSP, we receive in dollars!”

The dollar has strengthened since then, but the yen still has it beat, with the exchange rate currently sitting at 88.62 yen per dollar. Put in Xbox LIVE terms, 1600MSP ($19.99 US) retails at a rate of ¥2,240 ($24.94 when converted). When the percentage of the sales owed to content creators on a 1600 msp game is disbursed, Microsoft calculates based on $19.99 per copy (the US cost of the points), regardless of how much a consumer paid for the 1600MSP that enabled the purchase.

Around our Network: PSN Fans is giving away 50 copies of Wheels of Destruction.

We typically stay very focused on XBLA at XBLA Fans. We only cover stories directly related to the platform with the occasional hardware related post here and there. However, our sister site PSN Fans has worked out something pretty amazing: this Saturday PSN Fans will be live-streaming a game night with the developers for Wheels of Destruction and they will be giving out 50 codes for the full game on PSN between now and the end of the event. Make sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date as well as checking out all the details on their post.

Let us know if you would like us to try to set up something similar at XBLA Fans. I can think of a few games that would be fun to stream but I’d love to hear what you’d like to see.

Housemarque Interview

Developer Housemarque’s Outland has been on XBLA for only a few weeks but has already claimed its place as one of the service’s best games.  We recently interviewed the game’s Lead Designer Aki Raula, so strap yourself in, choose between light and darkness and be sure to dodge those pesky bullet-hell, um, bullets.

XBLAFans: So, Outland has been released and has received glowing reviews. How does that feel?

Raula: It feels like our hard work has been noticed and people appreciate it. We are very happy of the spectacular reception for Outland – it is, and continues to be, beyond our expectations. As a small studio we also hope the review success translates to sales so that we can keep on making great games!

Pretty in Pink, new Castle Crasher on the way

Castle Crashers developer The Behemoth is about to release some new DLC in the form of a new character for PSN.  Fret not XBLA fans for the content will be coming to Xbox 360 at sometime in the future and it sounds like it will be in the form of a title update rather than paid DLC.

The new character is in the form of the Pink Knight, apparently the most requested new character ever. On PSN the Pink Knight comes with a Lollipop and four other weapons, whether these will also come to Xbox is unclear.   The Behemoth will be announcing more info on the future update and what it will contain, so keep an eye out!

Redefining a Genre: Skulls of the Shogun Aims to Add Accessibility; Keep Depth

The following article is based around an email interview conducted by our team with Jake Kazdal, CEO of Haunted Temple Studios. For the uninitiated, Haunted Temple Studios is currently developing Skulls of the Shogun for Xbox Live Arcade for Spring 2011 release.

Skulls of the Shogun is a turn based strategy title. Players take on the role of a Samurai General who was betrayed by one of his closest allies and slain in the moment of his greatest victory. Awakened in the afterlife, he finds the same opponent has betrayed him again in death. As a result, he begins a rampage trashing the laws of the Samurai afterlife as he seeks revenge.

Weapon combos aplenty in Blacklight: Tango Down

In Blacklight: Tango Down it’s all about weapon customization. As the most recent Dev Diary shows, the focus of this online first-person shooter is to build your ultimate weapon. There are six basic configurations with 20-30 additions that modify attributes like reload time, clip size, bullet spray, and scope.

The creators want you to be able to make a weapon so distinct to who you are that other players could tell whose weapon they picked up. While this may be a stretch, it’s clear to see that this game is attempting to distinguish itself from the billions of other FPS that exist. By releasing this game solely through online distribution and by concentrating on giving gamers the power to create their own unique weapon, they hope to give us something we haven’t seen before. Originality is something that’s hard to find in the FPS genre, so any attempt to give us a new experience is worth checking out.
