Rumor: Alan Wake: night springs will be an XBLA title (Update)

An extremely trusted source has leaked to us that the upcoming Alan Wake: Night Springs will be an Xbox Live Arcade title and not a retail release. We have seen screen caps, but have been asked not to disclose them at this time. We have emailed Microsoft asking for a comment and will update as the situation develops.

We would like to point out that we announced the Gotham City Imposters XBLA game months ago, which was recently confirmed. We cannot confirm details about Alan Wake: Night Springs yet, but we expect an official announcement to come soon.

Update:

Eurogamer talked to Remedy earlier this month and a quote was given that seems to confirm our rumor:

“Fans of the franchise will be excited to learn that yes, more Wake is coming! But to be absolutely certain to avoid confusion, this next Wake instalment will not be Alan Wake 2. And neither will it be DLC,” head of franchise development Oskari Hakkinen.

Section 8 Prejudice Community Blowout winners

So this past weekend we had a blast playing Section 8 Prejudice with the XBLA community. We met a lot of awesome guys online and had a blast playing with TimeGate Studios. Huge thanks to Microsoft and TimeGate Studios for allowing us to participate in the event. We’ve submitted your questions, including a few we gleaned from the event itself to TimeGate.

As most of you know, we ran a contest leading up to the event and we were pleased with the responses we got, especially from our fans on Twitter. You guys kicked butt helping promote this event. Facebook fans, we hope you take this as a challenge to step it up next time!

Paypal to be included in Spring dashboard update

Paypal will be included as a new payment option as of the upcoming May 19 dashboard update. It can currently be selected as a billing option when setting up a console via the Xbox accounts website, but this update enables users to select it via the dashboard when paying for memberships and downloadable content.

The spring update will also ensure that consoles are ready for Microsoft’s new disc format which will be implemented later this year. The new disc format will enable more storage on DVDs along with better copy protection. Avatar Kinect will also be released as part of a separate update on May 27. Microsoft has stated that the dashboard update will be rolled out in six installments between May 19 and May 30 to ensure “high quality deployment”.

Microsoft purchases Skype

Skype is quickly becoming the go-to term for an internet call much the way people use the term Google for doing an internet search. Microsoft is apparently well aware of Skype’s value, having purchased the company this morning for a sum of 8.5 billion USD. They plan to extend Skype support to the Xbox 360 and Kinect, Windows Phone 7 devices, and other unnamed devices. No details have been released as to any changes to free internet calling or paid calling plans, but given that Microsoft saw the value in Skype’s current business model it’s entirely possible that nothing price-wise will change. Hit the jump to see the full press release.

EA already has the new Xbox? *Update – EA denies claims*

According to some inside sources Microsoft already has working developer kits for the next Xbox system. According to this same source EA already has these consoles on there desks ready to create the next generation of games.

Now to the untrained eye it would seem to most that the new consoles are nothing more then new PC’s for the office. As many of us know already though this is how they ship the new consoles so companies can get a jump on developing games. Lots of people seem to forget that this is how the last new console was shipped as well. When Microsoft originally sent out developer kits for the 360 they were nothing more then dual core G5 PowerPC Macs with an ATI X800 GPU, which is as we all know not what came in our little white box once it went retail.

According to Develop-online.net Microsoft has plans of announcing this new console at E3 and will be launching it around the end of 2012. We all know how the rumor mill works though things rarely stick to the wall when they are thrown. With that said just after this story broke the folks over at Eurogamer have had there own inside source completely deny the reveal of this new console at E3, so don’t hold your breath.

*Update*

Kotaku contacted EA spokesman Jeff Brown for comment, to which Brown stated “This story is a total fabrication – 100 percent not true”. Works for us. Buying new consoles so often gets expensive.

Kinect sells 2.4m in Q3 of Microsoft’s fiscal year

Kinect seems to be a hit. In the past three months 2.4 million units have been sold, bringing the total above 10 million. This may yet prove that the hands-free (or is it hands on?) gaming device is more than just a fad, unlike poor R.O.B., who is nothing more than a collector’s item. Although Kinect’s launch titles left something to be desired for more avid gamers (Kinectimals anyone?) new and innovative titles such as Twisted Pixel’s The Gunstringer are sure to expand the possibilities of what it can do.

Telltale Games sign licensing agreement with Microsoft

Jurassic Park

Ever since Sam and Max, Telltale’s wonderful point-and-click adventures have been absent from the Xbox Live Arcade, with Puzzle Agent and more recently, Back to the Future hitting PSN and PC. Luckily, things have changed, and we could be seeing these titles making their way over to us. The publisher and developer have announced that they have signed a publishing agreement to potentially bring these great titles and any future projects to the 360.

Dan Connors, the co-founder and CEO of Telltale Games, stated the following in a press release: “Adding console support to our acknowledged expertise in digital downloads is another positive step in our long-term growth strategy”. So while we don’t know yet what titles will hit Xbox Live Arcade one very likely candidate is Jurassic Park, currently in development.

Full House Poker review (XBLA)

Full House Poker was developed by Microsoft Games Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios.  It was released March 15, 2011 for 800MSP. A copy of the game was provided by the publisher for review purposes.

Last year, 1 vs. 100 pushed boundaries for what the digital space could provide on consoles by engaging thousands of players at one time in a game show like format. This year, Microsoft is back at it again with a spiritual successor of sorts in the form of Full House Poker. Players fill the shoes of their own avatars as they play the prevalent form of Poker (Texas Hold ‘Em), while attempting to expand their own virtual bankrolls. But do the cards deserve you going all in?

Microsoft making plans for their next-gen console?

Microsoft has posted advertisments on LinkedIn for 3 jobs which look like the inital steps in developing a next-gen console.  There are 3 jobs listed: a “hardware verification engineer“, a “VLSI performance architect“, and a “VLSI grachics architect“.

Unfortunatly the fact that these jobs are being posted NOW, more than likely means that its still in the initial concept stage. This would mean we are unlikely to see anything regarding features, design, or capabilities anytime this year…next year if we are very lucky and on our best behaviour. However it is good to see that it is in the works, that great things are being done in Redmond, and that a shiny new Xbox (if it’s called an Xbox) will be gracing our homes within the next few years.
