Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax review (XBLA)

Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax was developed by Marvelous Entertainment, Inc. and Opus Studios, Inc., and retails for 800 MSP.

Half-Minute Hero arrives on XBLA after enjoying substantial success on the PSP. The game is what its name implies, more or less: a traditional Japanese RPG style hero, who saves the world in 30 seconds, give or take a reset from the Time Goddess, over and over again.

For the most part the game works like this: hero appears in an area, an evil lord announces that he will cast the spell of destruction, which will destroy the world. The spell takes 30 seconds to complete. A timer appears at the top of the page and our hero must rocket into action. Thanks to the Goddess, the timer can be paused while in towns or reset if enough cash is on hand (the goddess has to make a living, after all). In the time allotted, the player must advance to a level at which they can beat the local evil lord, and possibly solve a side quest or two.

For simplicity’s sake and so that we don’t leech from them, each of the links below will take you to their site. Remember, these are awards, so they’re given out to the player by completing criteria in each game. For more detail hit up the Avatar Awards site. You can also follow them on Twitter at @AvatarAwards360.

We’ve got a big backlog to fill between the AvatarAwards and things that pre-date their site, so this one’s a lot longer than usual. Hit the jump to see the list. Also, let us know if we missed one.

Half-Minute Hero getting new visuals for XBLA release

Hot on the heels of announcing a release date and price, Marvelous Entertainment has detailed some of the changes we’ll see to the XBLA release of Half-Minute Hero. Rather Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax to give the game its full name.

The most notable change to the game is a brand new high def visual style. Gamepro got a early peak at the game and describe the graphics as “more in line with the flat, construction paper stylings of South Park”. Quite the change from the original PSP games 8-bit inspired visuals. For those not too enamoured with the new style there’s no need to fret as the option to play using the retro graphics will be available.

You can see more of the new visuals for yourself in the screenshot gallery after the jump.
