What we are playing: January 22

What we are playing is a weekly column that appears each weekend. Various staff members let the world know what games had them hooked the past week and which ones they look forward to

Steve Melton – I’m about half way through Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. I like it so much I picked up the sequel, Edge of Time, for when I’m done. Other than that I recently finished Stacking, which I might play through again and had a great time playing Hydro Thunder Hurricane online over the past few days.

Perry Jackson – Most of the week has been mostly a couple of games. I’m still playing Mega Man 9 and on the last couple Wily stages, hoping to beat it finally. Other than that, I’m currently playing Scarygirl for review which should be up shortly, it’s an interesting game and going to have a lot to say about it. Oh and I saw Anamanaguchi over the weekend (artist that did the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game soundtrack) and it was amazing!

Todd Pantier – I’ve been pumping a ton of time into Gears of War 3 with the Fenix Rising DLC coming out this week. I’m also loving the “Stay Frosty” playlist they have going and double XP is always a bonus too. I also downloaded Hero Academy for my iPhone and have been having a good time with it. I’m still trying to finish up Trine 2 with each class too.

Nick Santangelo – Although I’ve had Gears of War 3 since its release, the campaign has been largely ignored. That changed this week as three friends and I plowed through a few acts. Those Lambent Berserkers are quite the bullet sponges. The remainder of my gaming time was spent on Deus Ex: Human Revolution and a few rounds of Halo: Reach.

Todd Schlickbernd – I’m finally coming off my League of Legends streak and returning to other games. Recently I’ve been playing Magicka and wishing it was on XBLA like nobody’s business. Other than that I’ve been holding a copy of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for a friend. I think I’ll just buy all Capcom fighting games used from now on to not support their crappy re-release behavior.

Matt Liparota – Honestly, last week was so hectic for me in the real world I barely found any time to pick up a controller. My Xbox was pretty neglected, but Super Mario 3D Land and Tetris: Axis are still getting decent workouts in my 3DS.

Ryan Reynolds – Most of my gaming time this week was spent with Gears of War 3. I honestly think it was the best multiplayer game of 2011 so I play it consistently, but the new map pack this week gave me extra incentive. I’ve also been playing DeathSpank here and there but I can’t seem to get into it. The game’s humor just doesn’t do it for me.

John Drawdy – Hmmm…lets see, this week I played a little bit of Iron Brigade, loving that survival mode. Once again I am slowly suffering through AMY again, this time on hard (damn achievements) and finally got around to starting on Golf: Tee It Up!

Nathan Bowring – This week I got a lot of variety in my gaming. I got all of the multiplayer achievements in Assassin’s Creed Revelations, making progress in Orcs Must Die!, played a little bit of Halo: Reach, and on top of all that I controlled a giant robot monster in Bulletstorm. What a week!

Craig HartNFL Blitz has been my go to game this week. During a challenging week, it was great to be able to take out my frustrations on the gridiron. I also believe that the Elite League is hugely underrated. Even after getting a horrible starter pack, I had great enjoyment in building my team one key player at a time. I am officially addicted to Blitz.

Christine Mitchell – I didn’t get a lot of time for gaming this week but did manage to fit in a 2 hour Dance Central 2 session this weekend. Feel the burn!

What we are playing: January 15

What we are playing is a weekly column that appears each weekend. Various staff members let the world know what games had them hooked the past week and which ones they look forward to

John Laster – Finally off my Dungeon Defenders kick. Now it’s time to play through the best of fall retail; Skyrim, Saints Row 3, Modern Warfare 3, Assassins Creed: Revelations await me.

Perry Jackson – Haven’t really played much beyond some older retro games like Mega Man 3. But I did pick up Orcs Must Die! on sale and it’s so very good. Wish it had co-op though.

Nick DePetris – After two months, I finally managed to 1000/1000 Skyrim. I also managed to beat Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet and start working on L.A. Noire, but decided to take a break from those darker games with a trip down memory lane by playing The Maw.

Nick Santangelo – I got Deus Ex: Human Revolution for Christmas and finally popped it in a few days ago. I’m liking it, but I wish Adam Jensen’s voice actor wasn’t channeling Christian Bale’s Batman so much. If he tells somebody to “Swear to Sarif!” I’m out. Other than that, I snuck in a few rounds of Gears of War 3 and Halo: Reach.

Matt Liparota – With the market free of big releases for the moment, I’m taking time to play catch-up. Rayman Origins, the best game from 2011 that nobody played, has spent a lot of time in my Xbox and I’m still working my way through Skyward Sword on my Wii. And, whenever I catch a spare minute, I run through a level or two on Super Mario 3D Land.

John Drawdy – So far this week I have played quite a bit of Iron Brigade, finally getting acquainted with the survival mode. On top of that I have been making my way through AMY, make sure to check out my review on that.

Mark Seymour – Still hooked on Battlefield 3. Playing through Uncharted 3, Mario Kart 7 and Quarrel too, which just about rounds off my backlog of games from 2011. Hooray.

Nathan Bowring – I recently finished Batman: Arkham CIty, and all I can say is wow. I also picked up Orcs Must Die!, proving I have no skill at strategy, but it’s still incredibly fun.

Ryan Reynolds – I played a lot of Horde in Gears of War 3 with my friends this week. Additionally I just started Deathspank, but I haven’t made it very far yet.

What we are playing: January 8

What we are playing is a weekly column that appears each weekend. Various staff members let the world know what games had them hooked the past week and which ones they look forward to.

John Laster – My Xbox has literally been on playing NFL Blitz or Dungeon Defenders all week. I’m a sucker for fun games that give you constant rewards to keep playing.

Christine Mitchell – I’ve been making my way through Batman: Arkham City and dancing off all that holiday excess by playing Dance Central 2.

Ross Adams – Still on the PS3 train right now, I got Uncharted 2 out of the way after a lot of frustration with the combat. Now playing through Heavy Rain and loving it, very unique and surprisingly engrossing game.

Steve Melton – Actually, with my LIVE account recently hacked (got it back two days ago) I dusted off my old Xbox and put several hours into Star Wars: Battlefront II. Why LucasArts hasn’t made a new Battlefront game absolute first priority is beyond me.

Perry Jackson – Been on a platforming binge with Sonic Generations and Rayman Origins after finishing the Coldstrike DLC for Renegade Ops. I’m shocked by how good Generations is since it feels like the best Sonic game in almost 15 years.

Nathan Bowring – What haven’t I been playing? I’m enthralled by Arkham City, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is amazing, Bulletstorm is as rude as it is fun, and the list goes on. This is why I shouldn’t wait until 2012 to play so many 2011 games.

Shawn Sarris – I have been playing tons of things. Of note is the fact I have all but 5 Arkham City achievements, I have sank already many hours into Forza 4 and I have gone back to Dungeon Defenders to play with the man in charge John L.

Ryan Reynolds – Finished my Halo: CE Anniversary co-op run on Legendary to witness Sarge, Bobby and the love shield. Very close to finishing my second run through Modern Warfare 3‘s campaign, this time on Veteran. Also enjoyed a little bit of Gears of War 3 multiplayer this weekend and I purchased Deathspank on sale this week which I’ll be digging into soon.

The Baconing DLC adds new co-op character

If you played The Baconing, you know there’s a colorful cast of co-op characters. Some newly-released DLC expands that roster and puts you in the shoes of Roesha, One Bad Mutha. Inspired by the 70′s, Roesha is a policewoman with a nasty attitude and oversizedgolden pistol. Her bullets can harm enemies or heal Deathspank, not to mention her deadly disco ball than makes enemies dance themselves to death. You can download Roesha now for 160MSP. If you want to know more about The Baconing, you can read our review.

The Baconing review (XBLA)

The Baconing was developed by Hothead Games and published by Valcon Games. It retails for 1200 MSP. A copy of the game was provided for review purposes.

The Baconing is the third installment in the DeathSpank series. Why it isn’t simply called DeathSpank 3 is a mystery but with a game this over the top it only seems appropriate. This game has the hero DeathSpank seeking to destroy the Thongs of Virtue by burning them in bacon fire. This mission will branch of into countless other directions as the citizens of the world give DeathSpank other quests to do as well. Those familiar with the series know about the over the top humor of the game and frantic combat of the game. But is this installment enough to win over the uninitiated?

Sizzling footage of The Baconing

The guys over at GameSpot got Mike Inglehart, producer from Hothead Games, to stop by and demo The Baconing. During the demo they talk quite a bit about the game, giving us a little more insight as to exactly what this new DeathSpank installment is. They verify that everything you love from the previous games is here, but with new improvements and changes. They have seven new weapons like the Totally Legal Bat, tons of new characters, like Bob from Marketing and even a revamped card system. The release date was merely narrowed to this summer and Ingelhart said it’s guaranteed to becoming to PC/Mac. He doesn’t go into details as to what other platforms yet, but he tells you to make your best guess. Our guess? Xbox Live Arcade, PSN and iOS.

The Baconing: first details and screenshots

New details have emerged for Hothead Games’ The Baconing, a hybrid spinoff/sequel to the DeathSpank series. The game is the first in the series not to feature the titular character (DeathSpank) in the title, and follows him as he continues his adventures. The hero tries on all six Thongs of Virtue at once, inadvertently summoning an evil power. To conquer this new enemy DeathSpank must destroy five of the six thongs in the fires of bacon, whatever that means.

The Baconing will retain the two player co-op system, but will allow players to choose from four playable characters. Rumors have surfaced of Sparkles and Ninja Steve returning as well as other allies from the first two games, but there has been no word as to what role those characters will play. The game is due out sometime this summer on Xbox Live Arcade. Hit the jump for additional screenshots and box art.

Could Darkspore come to XBLA?

The fine folks over at Game Rant have recently talked to Mike Perry, the executive producer on Darkspore. They asked him if Darkspore is likely to show up on consoles, Perry had this to say on the matter.

“As we launch ‘Darkspore’, we’re going to play close attention to our community — it’s not the kind of game that we’re just going to ship and forget about! It’s a game that we’re going to ship, and we’re going to continue to support and upgrade for as long as we can. So, if players in our community say that they feel like ‘Darkspore’ should go somewhere besides PC, we’ll absolutely pay attention to them, and see what we can do there.”

As Game Rant points out, this is certainly far from a confirmation but it does suggest it is something being considered. The Deathspank games proved very popular on XBLA and Torchlight which is very close to release is highly anticipated. There does seem to be a market on XBLA for action RPGs in this style so Darkspore could be a good fit with the service.
