A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda EX coming to XBLA

ARES_6

A re-mastered port of A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda, currently available on Steam, was recently announced for XBLA to be published by Aksys. The original game is an action-platformer set in the near-future, casting players in the role of the robot Ares, navigating and shooting his way through a variety of environments that bring to mind memories of Capcom’s Megaman X series. The “EX” in the console version’s title refers to a variety of enhancements made to the game specifically for the new port.

These enhancements are extensive — the game should feel more like a remake than a port by the time everything is said and done. Ares is receiving new upgrades to help him fight completely new enemies in brand new areas. Additionally, the XBLA port adds a second playable character named Taurus, who will be stronger and more tank-y than Ares at the expense of some mobility.

The game will also feature completely redone graphics — both new high-resolution textures added for the EX edition, and all-new animated cutscenes. In addition to the excellent soundtrack by Hyperduck Soundworks, the EX edition will come with a second soundtrack composed by Charlie Parra Del Riego, whose metal stylings will fit the new Taurus character.

The game looks to be following in Spelunky’s footsteps, another PC game that had an excellent conversion to the XBLA platform. More great games on XBLA are always welcome — look forward to more news regarding A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda EX in the coming months!

Bit.Trip Presents: Runner 2 slides into early 2013

Gaijin Games’ Bit.Trip series hasn’t graced XBLA but the announcement a while back for Bit.Trip Presents: Runner 2 is causing fans to go back to one of the best installments in the series, Bit.Trip.Runner. It’s a 2D endless runner where you are moving to the right with one wrong move making you start from the beginning. We were hoping it would hit XBLA by 2012 but sadly, this isn’t the case.

The trailer above shows off some of the newer worlds and the new retro levels which look straight out of an SNES game. But by the end, it’s revealed that the game will be hitting XBLA and other systems by early 2013. Kind of a vague date but it’s a bummer considering my PAX East preview painted the game in a glorious light and stil looked great even if it was an early build. They’ll have the latest build at PAX Prime this year and XBLA Fans will be there, jumping and dancing with Gaijin. If you love platforming and dancing for extra points, keep an eye on this promising title in 2013.

Bit.Trip Runner 2 coming to XBLA

The closest the Bit.Trip series has been to being on XBLA was Commander Video being featured in Super Meat Boy. Today, developer Gaijin Games and publisher Aksys Games announced that the Commander will finally have his own adventure on XBLA. Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhyth Alien will be the first installment of they rhythm-platforming series on XBLA, featuring multiple characters, ten new abilities, costumes, leaderboards, achievements, checkpoints, multiple difficulties, and even more to be announced. We unfortunately have to hold in our excitement, because the game won’t be released until 2012. Until then, the official website has enough content to keep us satisfied, including a great brainstorming video. Thanks to @BenPerLee for bringing this exciting anouncement to our attention.
