The Adventures of Shuggy review (XBLA)

Adventures of Shuggy was developed by Smudged Cat Games and published by Valcon Games. It was released June 15, 2011 for 800 MSP. A copy of the game was provided to us for review purposes.

We’re used to thinking we find the best platformers on the classic Nintendo or Sega consoles, but in the growing future we see Xbox Live Arcade as a platform for that genre. With calls to classic difficulty in Super Meat Boy or offering an artistic experience with Braid, the types of game in that genre boom and The Adventures of Shuggy brings that same flavor.

As Shuggy, you inherit a mansion with over 100 challenge rooms. Your mission is to go throughout the rooms all over the mansion and collect the gems in each room. The game goes from tricky to downright complex in a matter of levels and the amount of variety will keep your thumbs on the edge.

What we are playing: Week of June 19th

This is a new piece we’re starting to let our readers know what we’ve been playing the past week. This will be coming out once a week from this point and should give a little insight into what we play just for fun. Please leave a comment letting us know what games have you hooked.

John Laster – Last week I played awesome new unreleased games. This I write about them. If I ever finish I plan on rewarding myself with inFAMOUS 2 or Child Of Eden. Oh, and I can’t wait for that Trenched game.

Kaitlyn Chantry – I was with John last week playing a ton of games that haven’t come out. So, I wish I were playing War of the Worlds or Bastion. Instead, I’m finally playing Red Dead Redemption and ilomilo—both fun in their own ways.

Justin Last – Last week I’ve been continuing Ezio’s adventures in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and finishing up the fight against Dr. M in Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves through the PS3 The Sly Collection. If I have enough credit on my account I’m hoping to pick up Akimi Village next. Ninja Bee is my favorite XBLA developer, and I’m anxious to try out their first PSN outing.

Andrew Crews – I’ve been playing a lot of Jamestown on Steam. It’s an excellent 16-bit shooter that all schmup fans should check out. I also picked up Adventures of Shuggy on XBLA. I’m only 80% done with the game, but so far it has been nearly a perfect game.

Perry Jackson – Just finished inFAMOUS 2 and I have to say, it was a very good game and shows how good Sucker Punch is at making sequels. Now I also picked up Vanquish and now starting up Adventures of Shuggy for review and hoping it’s as shugtastic as the rest of the writers say around here.

Stephen Haberman – Having caught an awful case of E3coli, I have been pretty gameless. I have been perfecting my abilities on The Heist on iOS. I also started working on finishing L.A. Noire.  I had some extra money on the system, so I bought the Rockstar Pass for all the extra content. Next week I hope to feel better, and game more!

Nathan Bowring – I’ve gone back to Trials HD to see if I could do any of the expert levels. It has been very hard; so far I’ve only conquered one. I’ve also become addicted to the Infection mode in Halo Reach. If you play it on Live this weekend, I’ll be the zombie who can barely get one kill in.

Todd Schlickbernd – I checked out Adventures of Shuggy and have been enjoying that as a game to play for half an hour at a time or so, gettin’ my 2D on. I’m encroaching on 50k gamerscore but I’m trying to break it with Trenched, so I’m being careful with what I’m playing. However, thanks to Gamestop’s buy 2 get 1 free, I finally picked up Lost Planet 2 and Saints Row 2; threw in Mass Effect 2 for free. Sequel-athon.

Ross Adams – Playing a certain upcoming Double Fine game, can’t say too much but you’ll be able to read my review of it early next week!

Ben Fisher – Still completely addicted to Rift, but I think I will surely be distracted by Trenched although I am seriously considering finishing off L.A. Noire.
