ARK: Survival Evolved is getting another new dinosaur. And also beetles. Dung beetles. Developer Studio Wildcard today gave gamers their first look at how these creatures will appear in-game after teasing them in some developer kit shots last week.

The Dimetrodon is an “adaptable carnivore.” Players can take shade or seek shelter next to him if they encounter extreme heat or cold waves, respectively, while playing. That’s thanks to a large insulating sail that runs along the back of the dinosaur. Dimetrodon will be friendly toward player-characters who come across the dinos as they roam swamplands on the hunt for small prey to eat.

And then there is the dung beetle. While obviously not a dinosaur, the creature is still described by Wildcard as “wondrous” thanks to it being an organic biofactory that consumes animal droppings and other waste material that its metabolism uses to produce burnable oil capable of powering generators and fertilizing crops. This literal ****eater is what it eats — or, at least, is the same size as what it eats. Yes, dung beetles are roughly the same size as dinosaur feces.

Both Dimetrodon and the dung beetle are set to release as part of v232 of ARK, which could be at least a few weeks, as players are still waiting for v30 to drop later this week. While you wait, take a look at the new creatures in action in the vid below.

Version 232 will also introduce craftable beer kegs. The kegs’ brews offer positive status effects to players but also inflict unpleasant “hangover” effects.
