Trials Evolution’s “homage to Limbo”

It’s but a day until Trials Evolution screams onto Xbox Live Arcade and amid ardent anticipation, Gamespot has snagged fresh footage of the Limbo-inspired track crafted in the game’s beefy track editor. Level designer Lee Rowland remarks on the track’s inception, how Playdead feel about it and the use of sound in his “homage to Limbo“. If nothing else, the two and a half minute clip demonstrates the raw capability of Evolution’s track editor as well as Rowland’s keen eye for the finer details; the spider cameo and falling of the ‘O’ in ‘HOTEL’ two particularly endearing sights.

Trials Evolution launches tomorrow (April 18) for 1200MSP.

Gotham City Impostors-related announcement coming April 18

Monolith Productions, masters behind Gotham City Impostors, will be making an amazing announcement April 18. Beyond the fact that the announcement will involve the amazing multiplayer shooter, it’s hard to tell what it will involve. The only hints we get is an extremely rude parrot and the “Don’t get a parrot, shoot one” poster. Does the abundance of parrot hint at a pirate theme, a bird theme, or is it just a red herring? Whatever Monolith is planning, we’ll be anxiously awaiting the reveal.

Friday Top Five: Top five XBLA trailers

There’s nothing more enticing than that tease, that pinch, that itch you get from a fantastic trailer. With retail games, so many of them get these bloated budgets and the trailers get absolutely insane, but XBLA has to rely on their creativity! Their imagination! Their sense of wonder!… And yes, money also. However, not every trailer is amazing, but the best ones combine with some great games and catchy trailer ideas to really entice you. This week’s Friday Top Five will be about these beautiful, and often evil, displays of awesome, wallet-attacking footage. We were looking for that marriage of gameplay, story, presentation and shameless plugging, and we’ve found the best examples of it.

Polytron commemorates the launch of FEZ with another trailer

You may have already heard, multi-award winning puzzle/platformer FEZ launched on Xbox Live Arcade earlier today. To celebrate the release – and the culmination of a troubled five year development period – developer Polytron has made public the above trailer. It doesn’t show anything particularly new but hey, FEZ looks pretty and sounds darling.

Polytron’s 2D (sort of) platformer has been showered with praise over the past few days. It’s currently sitting pretty with a Metacritic score of 90. If you’re swayed by that kind of thing, you’d have to go back to the year 2010 before you found another XBLA title that hit the 90-mark. The game? Namco Bandai’s superb PacMan CE DX. We published our FEZ review earlier today and joined the chorus of critics waxing lyrical over the XBLA exclusive.

“In an industry full of foreseeable outcomes and predictable solutions, Fez manages to stand out as a rare gem packed full of imagination and surprise”, said Andrew Crews. “Games like this are few and far between and should be cherished.”

FEZ is available now for 800 MSP.

Jeremiah Slaczka walks us through a match in Hybrid

Jeremiah Slaczka of 5th Cell recently gave GameTrailers a virtual walk through of a match in their upcoming tactical third-person shooter Hybrid, and there’s video footage to prove it. The video (which can be viewed above) shows off nearly five minutes of gameplay footage taken from a single round of the game’s Team Deathmatch mode. Throughout the video you’ll hear Slaczka narrating, talking about what’s going on in the game, and what makes Hybrid different from the rest of the shooter market. Also of interest is our interview with Mr. Slaczka himself from February in which we got all the juicy details on the game, its unique control scheme, and persistent online world war.

Hybrid is currently scheduled to release exclusively on Xbox Live Arcade this summer, but you might not have to wait that long to play it. 5th Cell will be running a beta for the game that is supposed to kick off toward the end of this month. To sign up for the beta, head on over to the game’s official site. Well, what are you waiting for?

The Walking Dead’s first four minutes

While previous videos gave a glimpse of the gameplay in The Walking Dead, we can now see a whole chunk of the game in action. The video shows off the beginning of the first episode, entitled A New Day. The scene starts off slow by easing you into the character Lee Everett as he sits in the back of a police car. He’s in awkward conversation with the cop driving, talking about his past and his crime. No guns, no gory zombie murders, but the final dialogue option perfectly sums up the feeling of a zombie apocalypse. Now that we know how it will begin, we can’t wait to continue the adventure of a survivor in the world of The Walking Dead when the series begins sometime in April.

Trials HD riddle solved

Trials HD community member “FatShady” shared the many details behind a collection of Easter Eggs hidden in the title as part of a complex riddle left behind by developer RedLynx’ Creative Director, Antti Ilvessuo. By properly identifying and dissecting each and every puzzle piece, it was said that both a question and an answer could be ascertained. Both were revealed today in the video above featuring none other than FatShady, bringing several years of intense searching and debating by the game’s community to a head. The final revelation may not be in line with what gamers were hoping for, but the video’s still worth watching for anyone who has spent time trying to unlock the game’s mysteries these past years.

Antti Ilvessuo had this to say about the riddle’s origins and players’ undaunted pursuit of the truth of it all: “You could say I created the riddle,” said Ilvessuo, “but what I really did was set the rules out. The game was played by the players, the riddle was discovered by them. I just started it. That was one [sic] really the key here.”

Sonic 4 Episode 2 launches May 16 with free DLC for Episode 1

Sonic 4 Episode 2 launches on Xbox Live Arcade May 16. GameSpot broke the news yesterday. The trailer, which looks all things Sonic, also provides details on a mini campaign featuring Metal Sonic available free to those who own both Episode 1 and Episode 2. Episode Metal features four new levels and charts the “rebirth of Metal Sonic.”

Episode 2 is likely the last entry in the Sonic 4 series, which was slated as a true sequel to the classic 90s platformers before its release. Series producer Takashi Iizuka told Digital Spy in March that following Episode 2, Sonic Team had no plans to release further games under the Sonic 4 umbrella.
