Skullgirls story trailer hints at eighth character

Really, this story trailer speaks for itself. Look at it! Watch it! It’s so cool!

Alright yeah there’s more to this story. Many have been expected Umbrella to be the eighth character in Skullgirls, but this trailer hints at Umbrella being a recurring story character rather than being playable (at least initially). If she is indeed Parasoul’s younger sister and Parasoul is the previous Skullgirl, that would make Umbrella pretty important as well. Now there’s no confirmation here, all speculation indeed, but the silhouetted figure at the end of the trailer is more likely the eighth character. Hopefully she’s not some overpowered v-13 (Blazblue) character or something to that extent. Either way, the story mode format seems to follow a traditional fighting style fight-by-fight mechanic with dialogue-based character interaction between fights. Who knows if it’s voiced over, would be nice though.

Alan Wake set to rewrite XBLA

IGN have published a new video from the development team behind Alan Wake’s American Nightmare. In the first of series of developer diaries, the team chat about what we can expect from Remedy’s latest title. The game is said to be a stand alone story in which Alan Wake will face his evil double, Mr Scratch. They also compare new gameplay to Tarantino’s From Dusk till Dawn, with hectic combat and leaderboards in comparison to the Stephen King suspense of the original retail game. Story is still a big part of the game however and the developers hope that it will redefine XBLA by raising the bar on quality.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare releases on XBLA February 22 and Remedy are promising a “hefty” amount of content for the 1200 MSP price tag.

Pinball FX2 expansion set to arrive this month

Developer Zen Studios is set to release Epic Quest, an expansion to Pinball FX2, it announced today. The medieval-knight themed table, which will be available to download this month, looks to merge classic pinball with some RPG-lite tropes. It will integrate seamlessly into the Pinball FX2 platform, the developer said, and arrive bundled with a stack of new achievements. Presumably all for a price.

The trailer boasts character progression and a leveling system, but that doesn’t look to extend much beyond a crowded wardrobe. The core pinball experience seems to very much be at the heart of Epic Quest. Hit the jump for screenshots of the new table.

Trials Evolution out spring 2012

New Trials Evolution footage has appeared on the Xbox Marketplace confirming that the highly-anticipated stunt-racer will launch spring 2012. That whittles it down to a period of about four months but should put to bed any lasting fears that Evolution would be reserved to headline this year’s Summer of Arcade event.

Alongside the customary blend of bike-racing, stunts and collisions, the video flaunts Evo’s “crazy powerful” track editor. Footage of a first person shooter, no less, accompanies the flurry of only-slightly less zany bike tracks and arrives but a few days after a separate video was leaked showcasing a Limbo-esque level. Crazy and powerful, it would appear.

Hit the jump for a trio of fresh screenshots.

Smudged Cat Games announces Gateways

Smudged Cat Games — creators of XBLA’s Adventures of Shuggy — today announced their next title, a puzzle-platformer going by the name Gateways. It isn’t yet clear as to whether Gateways is set to be a full XBLA game or not, but the footage and screens released so far appear to indicate that it will be an XBLIG release.

The Xbox and PC title is set to feature the usual genre staples such as jumping on the heads of baddies, leaping from platform to platform and hurtling over spike-filled pits. Players will take control of an inventor named Ed who has stolen the portal gun from Aperture Science invented a wholly-original device called the gateway gun. The gun can shoot gateways of various sizes onto pieces of the environment and upgrades to it will be unlocked as gamers progress through the adventure.

Smudged Cat isn’t taking things too seriously, and even poked fun at itself for biting off of Portal 2 by overtly pointing out that there won’t be any dastardly lies about cake in the game. Cave Johnson was unavailable for comment as of press time.
