With no Todd this week we’re joined by our other guide co-ordinator, Shawn Saris. He joins myself and Perry in a pretty long discussion of Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, so if you want to hear why you should be playing that, come listen.

Perry has some slightly more organised news bombs this week, with lots more announcements and such to talk about. After a week off Andrew brings back Crews’ Community Corner with a twitter topic and the Remember the Days game of the week for everyone to play.

What we are playing: February 26

What we are playing is a weekly column that appears each weekend. Various staff members let the world know what games had them hooked the past week and which ones they look forward to.

John Laster – I’m going to be playing a lot of Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Rayman Origins
on my brand new PlayStation Vita. Also picked up Super Stardust Delta and Escape Plan. So far, I am really loving this system. Oh also, I will be visiting Microsoft next week. Let me know if you have something you want brought to their attention or have any questions.

Perry Jackson – Went through the entire campaign of Alan Wake’s American Nightmare and it was really good, didn’t realize how addictive (and competitive amongst the staff) Fight Till Dawn would really be. Had some nitpicks but I’ll talk about them on the podcast. Other than that, trying to get back into Warp but it’s becoming more frustrating and less fun, maybe it’ll get better.

Nick DePetris – I took advantage of the President’s Day weekend to play through Mass Effect 2 for the first time. It’s just as good as everyone said. Fullfilling my Xbox Kinect Fans duties by spreading the Kinect love, I showed off Child Of Eden, Dance Central 2, Kinect Adventures, and Your Shape Fitness Evolved to someone who had never seen them. I also recently got a computer, so I’ve finally gotten a chance to play the charming and magnificent Psychonauts on Steam.

Ross Adams – When I haven’t been doing my best to top the leaderboards in the SSX demo, it’s been all Alan Wake’s American Nightmare this week. Loved the campaign and Fight Till Dawn has been surprisingly addictive. A lot of that has to do with trying to beat my fellow staff members scores, I’ll top that leaderboard yet!

Nathan Bowring – This week I’ve played bits and pieces of almost everything including Warp, Bulletstorm, and Monkey Island 2. I spent too much time enjoying the new Gotham City Impostors DLC (love the falcon blade). Unfortunately I haven’t made enough time for Alan Wake’s American Nightmare; although I’m thoroughly enjoying it I haven’t finished the story. Also, I’m terrible at Fight Till Dawn.

Ryan Reynolds – I finally jumped on the Kinect bandwagon so I spent what little free time I had this week playing Kinect Adventures, The Gunstringer and Fruit Ninja Kinect. Also still trying to make my way toward the perfect ending in Mass Effect 2.

John Drawdy – This week was a good week in my gaming life, we will start with the big
one, I finally played through and beat Bastion, it was AWESOME! I picked up Warp last week and have slowly been making my way through that and played some Fight Till Dawn in Alan Wake’s American Nightmare at my buddies house, which was fun. Though what I am most excited about from this week is getting down on some four player action on Mario Kart 64. Man them were the good ‘ole days, we need something like that on the 360 and pronto!

XBLA’s Most Wanted: The Strike series

With the release of Renegade Ops earlier this year, the name Desert Strike was name dropped a lot. In reality the games aren’t all that similar, but the few times you get to fly a chopper around reminded many of the long forgotten series.

Most remember the first game in the series Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf, which put players in control of an Apache attack helicopter. However there were actually five games in the series, with a sixth planned but ultimately cancelled (though it morphed into Future Cop: LAPD). The 16-bit era Strike games, Desert, Jungle and Urban were all fairly similar with the only changes being settings and the ability to pilot other (ground based) vehicles in the latter games.

With the jump to the PlayStation the core gameplay of the series remained the same but Soviet and Nuclear Strike boasted live action FMV. Of course this was all the rage at the time, usually looking extremely low budget and coming off as incredibly cheesy. While the FMV in the Strike games was a little cheesy and the acting slightly hammy, it was very well produced and often extremely effective. A lot of the praise goes to the fact they used FMV for everything, meaning you could look up videos on every enemy, weapon or mission objective. Even now we often have to trawl through a huge body of text to find out objectives or even learn how to play the game.

What folks need to understand about launch day DLC

There’s been a lot of stink in the news over the accidental reveal of the launch day downloadable content for Mass Effect 3. It’s an oft-repeated tale. Normally we’d side with gamers, but the reality is that people don’t realize there’s a few months before a game’s launch where the team needs to keep busy. That’s when they start actively working on DLC. The above chart (borrowed from Kotaku’s comments, click to expand it) explains the process well.

As development for a game winds down the team begins to shift: less folks are working on the core game and more get started on the DLC. Once it’s submitted for certification the team can’t sit there and twiddle their thumbs, they need to keep everyone busy. So they’re pretty much all working on DLC if they haven’t been assigned to a new game. Sometimes the DLC gets certified while the game is out getting discs pressed, manuals made, getting shipped to retailers, that sort of stuff. Nobody is trying to scam gamers by ‘leaving things out’. As you can see by the above chart, the pre-production process for the DLC isn’t started until the main game’s development gets churning, and at that point it involves the writers, concept artists, etc fleshing out the theme and story. Those folks have already done most of their job in regards to the core game, and they gotta stay busy.

What cracks us up is the second chart, which is the gamer’s perspective on the process. It’s funny cause it’s true. Even we in the media often put on blinders and think development is just one big block, but there’s a lot more to it. And if there’s one thing we needn’t do it’s to dog developers. These folks often put several 60 hour weeks in towards the end of development just to put out a game they hope-beyond-hope will be well received. They go home to their 2.5 kids, mortgage and car payments. They’re just like you and me, so cut em’ some slack.

Friday Top Five: Top five XBLA racing games

Racing games are an interesting sort. Like shooters, they’re at times so oversaturated with decent-yet-forgettable titles that it’s hard to pick the quality ones out from a sea of titles. Luckily XBLA is limited to 20-ish titles that revolve around the genre. Even still we have our favorites that we feel best represent what Xbox Live Arcade racing games should offer. While 20 participants enter the ring, only five make our list.

XBLAFancast Episode 50 – Anniversary Edition

Believe it or not, we’ve been doing this for a whole year (to the day!). We’ve gone through a lot of changes but we like to think we have a pretty good show on our hands at this point, we hope you do too.

Andrew’s out this week so it’s myself, Perry and Todd. We kick things off talking about Warp and a little about Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, Todd has a somewhat unique perspective having never played the original. Then Perry drops some news bombs as per usual. He also takes over Crews’ Community Corner, during which we have a couple of fairly long discussions about the future of the site and XBLA in general. Big thanks to @MRX93 and our own Steve Melton for their contributions to the twitter topics.

Please subscribe, rate and review the podcast on iTunes. We appreciate it! Check us out on twitter (@XBLAFans) where you can win codes for games, give us feedback or just ask a question. We are also now on Stitcher, so you can stream the show on your smartphone, give it a go!

Big thanks to Chris Green for the awesome theme music, be sure to check out his site BlurredEdge and why not follow him on twitter too @BlurredEdge.

What we are playing: February 19

What we are playing is a weekly column that appears each weekend. Various staff members let the world know what games had them hooked the past week and which ones they look forward to.

Nick Santangelo – Early in the week I was all over Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I’m about 30 hours deep now and am hopelessly addicted to it. The combat is spectacular and I love the vibrant, colorful art direction. I just wish they could get the load times down in these types of games — it really makes you think twice before entering a building to take on a quest or sell some items. I’ve had to step aside from it to play Alan Wake’s American Nightmare the rest of the week, but I can’t talk about that yet. You’ll just have to wait for my review on Monday.

Perry Jackson – Like most others, I’m playing through both Mass Effect games to prepare myself for the finale but I also picked up Warp and it’s not too bad. It’s kind of forgettable at times but it’s got some pretty solid mechanics and a cute art style to it. Looking forward to finishing it since Zero seems a little more dangerous than the Reapers at times.

John Drawdy – This week I have been all over the gaming spectrum, starting off with Heavy Weapon and a little Golf: Tee It Up!, In the newer game department I put in a little more time on Bastion, which is still amazing and finally finished up Unstoppable Gorg, not a bad tower defense game. As if that wasn’t enough I also got in a few hours on Warp, still not sure how I feel about it, and the Epic Quest table for Pinball FX 2, which is just pure fun.

Nathan Bowring – This week Gotham City Impostors became my new Halo. I’m playing it every second I have free time and having so much fun. I’ve gotten to the point where I can hit people with the bow while on a trampoline without trying. I’ve also made a little time for Warp, which I also love. Going to find time to replay Alan Wake this weekend to get me ready for American Nightmare. So excited!

Todd Pantier – I finished Final Fantasy XIII-2 early in the week and played a conglomerate of games in the middle of the week including Gears of War 3 (can’t wait for “Forces of Nature” on March 27) and Shank 2. After a long wait I finally got a key for the Diablo 3 beta. I have been playing it non stop since and don’t see that letting up for a while.

Matt Liparota – I didn’t get much gaming in this week, unfortunately; real life found a way to butt in. I was able to get in a little bit of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Professor Layton, but the majority of my scant gaming time this week went to the Mass Effect 3 demo. I couldn’t get enough of it; ME3 is probably the only full retail release of the first half of 2012 that I’m really looking forward to. March 6 can’t get here fast enough.

Ryan Reynolds – The majority of what little free time I had this week was spent replaying Mass Effect 2. I have to sharpen my skills and get the perfect ending in preparation for ME3. In addition, I started another Shadow of RAAM run with a friend in Gears of War 3 and I’m playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 online with friends when they’re online. Like everyone else.
