Description
Todd's gaming career started when he got his first 8 bit NES for his fifth birthday. He has loved video games from up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-B-A-start, to the first time he found out Samus Aran was a girl, to freaking out when Psycho Mantis knew he liked Castlevania, to begging Master Chief to turn around so he could see his face. He cried when Aeris died, teared up at the end of Lunar: SSS and Lunar: EB, can quote Castlevania: Symphony of the Night verbatim, and recruited all 108 Stars of Destiny.

February NPD Group shows Xbox 360 as top console (again)

The February NPD report is out and it has proved to be yet another solid month for Xbox. Microsoft maintained its place as the top console producer selling 460,000 units of the Xbox 360. That’s good for a 42 percent market share which extended the Xbox’s streak to twelve consecutive months with +40 percent market share. Out of the top 10 best selling games for the month, only the number nine title, Twisted Metal 2012, was not available on the Xbox. Total video game sales for February were $1.06 billion which was comprised of $381.4 million in hardware sales, $464.4 million in software sales, and $215.2 million in accessory sales. Overall video game sales were down approximately 20 percent from February of last year.

UPDATE:

Overall hardware sales in February 2011 were $467 million which is an 18 percent decline Y/Y. Overall software sales in February 2011 were $601 million which is an 23 percent decline Y/Y.  Overall accessory sales in February 2011 were $257 million which is an 16 percent decline Y/Y.

In February of 2011, the Xbox had its biggest non-holiday sales month with over 535K units sold which heavily aided hardware sales. Accessory sales in 2011 benefited from the release of the Kinect a few months earlier and those benefits were not present in last month’s sales. As far as software sales, Anita Frazier an analyst from the NPD group said “a decline in catalog sales was a major contributor to the decline in content sales at retail”. This indicates that people used different methods for getting games such as purchasing used games, F2P, add-ons, rentals, or subscriptions. All of these methods are not calculated in software sales however these medians did see a $50 million increase from January ($600 million vs $550 million).

Haunted Temple Studios goes underwater

Haunted Temple Studios has gone underwater. No they aren’t short on rent or paying their other bills – the studio behind the much anticipated XBLA game Skulls of the Shogun has been partially flooded thanks to a break in a water main in the office upstairs. Studio head Jake Kazdal said he was on Skype with a friend in Japan when heard the “pitter patter of rain” and realized his sweater was wet. Kazdal says, “Luckily we were here awake working and had time to salvage all our computers and books, remarkably few casualties but it was way too close!” He adds that “All my priceless favorite art books got out alive though, and my laptop, hard drives, 3DS, just before the ceiling EXPLODED”.

The team spent the next morning looking for a new studio in a day dubbed “Homeless Temple Studios”. They are temporarily set up in the warehouse next door and are “not moving back”. Sounds like the team is ok as is all their hard work. In fact, Kazdal replied to an inquiring Tweet and noted that the will have “a new trailer available soon with all the latest.” We know the team at Haunted Temple is happy all their belongings made it out ok but it’s also good to hear that there shouldn’t be any major impacts to the schedule of the game.

Del Taco Kid’s Meals include Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet clings

Even explorers of foreign planets get hungry and have to eat which makes a partnership between Del Taco and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet only natural. The restaurant and game have teamed up to offer “battle clings”  and a double sided “Battle Board” in Kid’s Meals so your little explorers can’t help fight off the aliens too. The toys are available at participating Del Tacos for a limited time which is sad news for those of us that don’t have the restaurant close.

Skulls of the Shogun coming this fall

The team at Haunted Temple Studios has been working hard on their debut strategy game Skulls of the Shogun. According to an update posted on their Facebook page in response to a fan inquiry the team had hoped the game would be out about now but have been “working with Microsoft to add a couple very cool features we can’t talk about just yet”. In addition to these “very cool features” they’ve been working on a new platform and “polishing every gameplay feature within an inch of its life”.

A “proper announcement” is coming in the next couple of weeks so we shouldn’t have to wait too long to hear about these cool features and maybe even get a solid release date. The fall timeline seems pretty likely since the team says “only an act of God is gonna stop us now”. Hopefully the Mayans won’t interrupt the release either.
