PAX East: Magic the Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014

magic2014.0_cinema_640.0

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Wizards of the Coast about the next iteration of the annualized Duels of the Planeswalkers franchise: Magic the Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014. It was pretty clear the bigger reveal will be happening later this year (likely at E3); however, Wizard did shed light on a few interesting tidbits. At this time, there are still no plans to provide a full deck editor: a highly requested feature. The Duels franchise is intended to give players an interesting cross section of the Magic the Gathering Multiverse. As such, decks are prebuilt and can be customized within that context with unlockable cards. Duels is the gateway drug that moves players to Wizards other Magic the Gathering Properties when they want a more in-depth experience.

This year, Duels will feature another new mode, along with the standard battles and challenges. Players will get a sneak peak at cards from the 2014 Core Set along with an assortment of cards from previous blocks. Dragon’s Maze and the rest of the Ravnica block will not be featured. Wizard wasn’t willing to divulge any secrets as to new card mechanics we could expect to see with the game. As usual, the cards will all be labeled D14 to avoid confusion among new players, instead of different icons highlighting the blocks they come from in the Magic Multiverse.

The game’s menu interface looks to have seen a nice facelift but that’s about all we can comment on for now. The game looks to be shaping up nicely. In a sense, it has turned into the Madden of XBLA. We know to expect it with a full new roster, some nice cosmetic tweaks, and a highly rabid fan base each year.

Duels is perfect for the newcomer to the Magic Multiverse and especially perfect for someone who wants to try multiple types of decks without having to spend hundreds of dollars procuring the cards. It simplifies the rulesets by automating it and letting you see exactly what is allowed. Expect Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014 to launch sometime this summer prior to the 2014 Core Set.

In the meantime check out our Review of Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 and our Challenges and Encounters Guides.

XBLA Fans is looking for additional team members

xbla crazyness

With quarter four and its associated deluge of AAA retail games behind us, XBLA Fans is looking to come out of hibernation. There are a lot of amazing things happening very soon and down the road, and we can’t wait to share them with our readers.

The team behind XBLA Fans has some pretty awesome projects in the works. We want to continue to be your source for XBLA news, previews, reviews, commentary and most importantly to me — discussion. Nothing makes me happier than seeing how the community has embraced us. I love having the ability to foster discussion and connect fans with developers. I love that we are able to help find unique and interesting stories. We aren’t focusing on analytics; we are focusing on cultivating interactivity.

So we are going to be delivering content through additional mediums this year. We are going to be interacting more on Facebook, more on Twitter, more on our Forums, and more through the XBLA Fans site itself.

At this time, we are looking to add 2-3 additional writers who can work on original news and features. You will need to be comfortable interviewing developers and asking questions, and must be 18 or older, as we use real names for our writers. Beyond that requirement, we can teach the rest. The position is entirely voluntary but provides you with a great resume builder. Feel free to talk to our team about what it’s like working at XBLA Fans; we think they’ll give it a pretty great recommendation. For these general writing positions you can live anywhere in the world, all you need is writing ability and an Xbox 360. Please let us know if you own a Kinect.

If the position interests you, please send an email with a resume and writing sample to John@XBLAFans.com with the Subject: Writing for XBLAFANS. If you have any questions feel free to post them in the comments or include them with your application email.

Newsbit: Minecraft 1.82 Update close to submission for certification

We receive dozens of questions about the 1.82 Minecraft Update. The Adventure Update will bring the much awaited creative mode to the Xbox 360. While we still don’t have a date, 4J Studios has tweeted that they are close to sending the game to Microsoft for certification. There is no guarantee how long this process will take or that they will make it through certification on their first try, however, with the sales and noteriety of this title we have to imagine Microsoft and 4J Studios are doing all they can to bring this update as soon as possible.

Updated: The XBLA Game with a $300 Achievement

A recent twitter discussion with Philip Kollar brought something to light that probably would have taken me months to notice. I’ve never been a big achievement guy. I play games until I get bored with them and they are no longer fun. I’m not the type to grind away to get some unrealistically absurd number of multiplayer matches. To me, my time is more valuable than that reward. But for others, like our own Andrew Crews, achievements mean a lot. In particular, he likes to complete games.

If you look at Rock Band Blitz, there are a few achievements that cannot be completed without outside DLC. In particular, the Party At Your Place (play unique 300 songs) achievement is the most egregious offender. Even for someone who has purchased every main release Rock Band game to date, they will be around 140 songs shy.  Even assuming you imported Rock Band and Rock Band 2 for a total of $15 (the export cost from borrowing the discs from a friend) players will be sitting around 160 songs in their Rock Band Library that is playable in Blitz. We’ve accounted the free indie pack already, but did not account for a few other random free songs that have been offered over the past few years.

Even so, to get the additional 140 needed songs will cost players an additional $280. When added to the transfer fees and the purchase price of Rock Band Blitz that is about $310 (assuming again you didn’t have to pay for Rock Band or Rock Band 2 beyond the transfer fee). This is a very slippery slope for paid games to head down. Something just feels wrong about not being able to “complete” the game as is after you purchase it.

Update:

Dan Teasdale of Twisted Pixel pointed out that some Rock Band Songs are on sale for 99 cents and there are a few Rock Band Track Packs that can also be bought for cheaper than the average $2 a song. The Green Day Rock Band game is also exportable for a $10 fee. This would add another 40 songs to the mix. Even still none of this accounts for paying for the disc if needed. This could half the cost from our original estimate. We still feel our $300 number is a fair estimate though as Dan points out it could be substantially lower for some thrifty users.
