Around our Network: PSN Fans is giving away 50 copies of Wheels of Destruction.

We typically stay very focused on XBLA at XBLA Fans. We only cover stories directly related to the platform with the occasional hardware related post here and there. However, our sister site PSN Fans has worked out something pretty amazing: this Saturday PSN Fans will be live-streaming a game night with the developers for Wheels of Destruction and they will be giving out 50 codes for the full game on PSN between now and the end of the event. Make sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date as well as checking out all the details on their post.

Let us know if you would like us to try to set up something similar at XBLA Fans. I can think of a few games that would be fun to stream but I’d love to hear what you’d like to see.

Huge Awesomenauts vinyl record giveaway!

If there is one thing that Awesomenauts has reminded us of it’s the fact that the ‘80s were awesome. In fact, even the fictional ‘80s characters of Awesomenauts seem way cool. Despite some earlier uncertainty, Awesomenauts launched on Wednesday, May 2. The title looks to try to revamp the Massive Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre on consoles. Outside of a brief flirtation with Monday Night Combat, MOBA has largely kept to its PC roots (think major success League of Legends and one of my personal favorites, Super Monday Night Combat). If you’re unfamiliar with the genre we highly recommend checking our XBLA Primer on MOBA. If you are on the fence with buying the game, check out our review.

We were huge fans of the game at PAX East so when the opportunity came around to throw a giveaway related to the game we were ecstatic. We’ve teamed up with Ronimo and Sonic Picnic for a pretty exciting giveaway totally deserving of the ‘80s: we will be giving away EIGHT vinyl records (pictured above). On the front side, the record contains an exclusive version of the complete Awesomenauts theme song and a fitting drum & bass remix. The B side contains a mega mix of all the songs in the game.

FOUR of these records will be given away right here on the site. A FIFTH record will be through our sister site Game Music Fans. Another (SIXTH) will be through PSN Fans. We will keep you updated as those contests go live.  The Game Music Fans contest is live here.

The last TWO will be available through Twitter and Facebook respectively. We want to get the word out about this, so everyone who likes our post  about the contest on Facebook and everyone who shares the following tweet will be entered for a chance to win a copy.

Tweet this: Checkout this great giveaway for a chance to win an Awesomenauts Vinyl Record! RT for a chance to win. bit.ly/LZqvjz

In order to win one of these beauties on our site, all you need to do is comment below with which character you are looking to play as in Awesomenauts. While you’re at it, you should probably familiarize yourself with the maps and how to play as well.

The contest will run until Friday May 18th. You may enter once on each website.

Enjoy guys!

Arcade Next is finally upon us with Trials Evolution launching earlier this morning. We are pretty excited about all four titles, but we’d love to hear your thoughts on which game will sell the most copies. We’re also currious what you think to the following questions. Will Trials Evolution, the sequel to one of the top selling XBLA games of all time, be able to surpass its forerunner? Will the bloody action title, Bloodforge, be able to draw a new crowd to XBLA? Can Minecraft strike gold twice as it launches to consoles? Will Fable Heroes be able to capture the attention of Fable fans? Let us know in the comments!

Trials Tuesday: Mindbender

We’re making a quick exception for this week’s Trials Tuesday post by showing off a track made by Redlynx that will be included in Trials  Evolution when the game  launches tomorrow. Trials Tuesday focuses on showcasing some of the more creative user made tracks. Make sure to bookmark the tag and check back each week. We’ve already thrown out a few ideas for the enterprising builders out there.

Mindbender features some distinctive camera shifting and is the spiritual successor to Dreamscape from the original Trails HD. Buildings rise up in the background, reminiscent of the blockbuster hit Inception. The level falls about halfway through Trials Evolution.

Minecraft for XBLA: Guide to Crafting and Item Tips

Minecraft for XBLA gives you just about every recipe that is currently available in the game. However, there are a few furnace recipes that are a little unclear to newcomers.

Sand when placed into a heated furnace will turn into glass. Glass cannot be broken down as it will shatter.

When cobblestone is placed into a furnace, it will turn back into smooth stone; however, when broken down it will return to cobblestone.

Lava can be used to heat a furnace. To do this, you need an iron bucket to capture the lava from the source. When placed into a furnace, it will head the furnace for a much, much longer time than a single piece of coal.

If you can’t find coal, you can create it using wood. Wood when burned will turn into charcoal. This is great for early game when you need torches.

Also, don’t forget that you can cook porkchops to increase the healing power of them!

Minecraft for XBLA: Guide to the End

You need to continue to work toward diamond tools. It won’t take you long to get a healthy supply of Iron. Use this to suit yourself up in armor and equip yourself with iron tools. This will let you go deeper into caves and mine for longer periods of time without worrying about health.

Diamond is what you are after in the end, and it is often times in some pretty hostile areas. Having an Iron suit of armor on can really help to alleviate some of your worries about dying. Diamond is precious and rare. If you find some, bring it back to the surface before something bad happens.

Don’t use up too much of your diamond on tools. Make a pickaxe and sword out of it, but hold off on the others until you have a very large supply of it. The same goes for armor. It takes a ton of diamond to make a full suit, and that can be better used on pickaxes for mining and swords for your defense.

Once you have diamond, mine up some obsidian using a diamond pickaxe. It is typically found deep underground where water and lava have collided. You can build a portal out of it, and using a flint and steel, you can light this portal up and take it to The Nether.

The Nether is like the underworld and is extremely dangerous. It is recommended you leave your valuables at home. Don’t bring in Diamond items, because it is likely you will die, and this place is filled will lava.

The Nether is filled with Netherrack and Soul Sand. Neither of which are too useful. However you can also find Glowstone here. Glowstone when turned into a block is one of the brightest lights in game and can light up an area similar to 2-3 torches. Netherrack when lit will burn forever.

After obtaining diamonds and reaching The Nether, the rest is up to you. You have all the major items now at your disposal, so go ahead and build a crazy world. Build houses, sky mansions, crazy mine systems, and underwater tunnels. Connect it all with elaborate mine cart systems and have lots of fun. Remember to light it up with torches though, because Creepers would love to come knock it all down.

Minecraft for XBLA: Guide to the Middle

By now, you should be ready to begin your mineshaft. Try to keep it inside, or very near to your house so that you can quickly get in and out of it while avoiding monsters. One of the most important things in Minecraft is to not dig straight down. Best case scenario, you’ll get stuck and have to jump your way up burying everything you just dug. Worst case scenario, you’ll fall feet first into lava.
Until you have torches ready don’t dig too deeply. Torches prevent enemies from spawning nearby. If you can’t light your mine, you’ll be stuck in a dark room with skeletons and the like.

Don’t forget about tool progression. At this point you’ll be approaching iron, which means you will need stone tools. Wood can mine stone, stone can mine iron, and iron can mine anything but obsidian, which requires diamond.

Be on the watch for Lava as you dig deep. Falling into a pit will not only kill you, but instantly burn all your items.

By now, you can take some time to expand your house. Make chests, multiple furnaces, and any other luxury items you might like. A proper door and alternate exit are also helpful.

It would be great to start a farm. You can get seeds by chopping down the tall grass. Use a hoe to prepare the dirt and plant the seeds. They will over time grow into Wheat. You can use this to make bread that will refill your health. Farming wheat takes only a few seconds, and can save you lots of time that you would have spent hunting pigs.

Place torches everywhere. Put them outside your house, inside your caves and on your roofs. The more light you have, the less bad guys will be near you. Most bad guys make noise so even if you can’t see them; you know when they are nearby. Creepers however are silent killers. Having torches lighting up your world will help you spot them before they spot you.

Minecraft for XBLA: Guide to Beginning

When you first start in Minecraft, you’ll find yourself standing in the middle of the world. There isn’t much guidance, as the game is entirely in your hands. It’s a lot like playing with Legos, except you need to break down the pieces before you can build it up.

Starting off you need to find the nearest tree to break it down. After you have some wood, you can build your first crafting table. Once you have a crafting table in place, build some tools and get to work building a home. Right now, you don’t need an ornate mansion; you really just need to focus on having something you can use to sleep at night. Make sure that you have four walls and a roof to keep the monsters away.

Once you have a house, you need to place a bed. Even if you are playing on peaceful, this is key, as Beds act as a spawn point should you die. There is nothing more frustrating early game than dying and being unable to find your way back to your home. To make a bed, you need sheep, which can typically be found in grassy areas. Going to sleep will skip the night and allow you to wake back up in the day time.

Stone is the next level of tool beyond wood and will be a huge help when mining deeper into the earth. You also need stone to build a furnace, which is key to breaking down ores. You can also cook porkchops from killing pigs, which will increase the healing effect of the pork.

Ideally, you’ll be able to find some coal near the surface. As you begin to dig into the ground you will need torches to be able to see and to be able to keep the monsters away. The game will periodically spawn enemies anywhere there is no light so make sure to keep your early tunnels lit.

What it’s like working at XBLA Fans

So I might have totally downloaded Instagram just as an excuse to share this photo, but I promise to avoid all puns involving editing articles until they are purrfect. Ok, no more puns after that one. XBLA Fans has an incredible team behind it (including our deputy editor pictured above), but we are always interested in speaking with talented individuals about ways they can get involved with the website. If you have a talent, we want to see it. While we don’t have any vacant writing positions, we are always willing to look at creating new roles. If you have a passion for XBLA and a strong ability to communicate through any medium: web development, text, art, video, audio, etc. please reach out to us: John@XBLAFans.com.

Also, our parent company is actively looking for help on our sister sites: XboxKinectFans.com and PSNFans.com. If you’re interested in gaining valuable writing experience and honing your craft, we highly suggest reaching out to them: editor@PSNFans.com and Nick@XboxKinectFans.com. In the past we have successfully been able to work with universities to help students earn course credit for their work with us.

Please note that at this time all positions are on a volunteer basis. We have some amazing projects in the works that I can’t wait to tell you about. We are committed to the long haul and can’t wait to continue to cultivate the XBLA and greater gaming community.

Who says you can’t preorder XBLA games…

Our very own John Carson has turned into quite the comedian lately (I think he’s channeling his namesake). When talking about how excited I was for Fez I mentioned I wished I could preorder XBLA titles. He responded with the above image. Touche good sir. Touche.

By the way while you’re waiting to pick up Fez check out all the other amazing games coming down the XBLA pipeline: XBLA Fans PAX East Coverage
